Ulaanbaatar, Apr 24 (IBNS): Wrapping up her visit to China, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday commenced her two-day visit to Mongolia.

The Indian Minister took a special flight for Ulaanbaatar from Beijing to reach the land-locked nation.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Mongolia B Battsetseg received her at the airport.

MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted: "First visit of an Indian External Affairs Minister to Mongolia in 42 years! Reconnecting with our shared Buddhist heritage, EAM @SushmaSwaraj warmly received by Deputy Foreign Minister of Mongolia, B.Battsetseg on her arrival in sunny Ulaanbaatar."

Her visit to the nation assumes significance as she is the first Indian foreign minister in 42 years to visit Mongolia.

"External Affairs Minister (EAM) will visit Mongolia from 25-26 April 2018 at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Damdin Tsogtbaatar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia," read a statement issued by the MEA.

During her visit, EAM will co-chair the sixth round of India-Mongolia Joint Consultative Committee (IMJCC) meeting with Foreign Minister Tsogtbaatar, covering a range of issues including inter alia, political, strategic, economic, educational and cultural ties.

The last meeting of IMJCC was held in New Delhi in 2016.

During her visit, EAM will also deliver the keynote address at the Kushok Bakula Birth Centenary Celebrations in Ulaanbaatar commemorating the birth anniversary of Late Venerable Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, a highly revered Buddhist leader and monk from Ladakh, India and a former Ambassador of India to Mongolia. Bakula Rinpoche as the longest serving Indian Ambassador to Mongolia, made seminal contribution to promotion of India-Mongolia ties.

In China, Sushma Swaraj attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting.

She also met Chinese President Xi Jinping.
