Supreme Court to hear Aadhaar validity case today

| @indiablooms | Jan 17, 2018, at 05:26 pm

New Delhi, Jan 17 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear the Aadhaar validity case in response to several petitions that raised questions on whether the 12-digit Unique Identification Number is breaching individual's right to privacy or not, media reports said.

The Supreme Court will hear the case for the last time on Wednesday.

The apex court on Tuesday announced formation of a five-member constitution bench that remains the same as the previous one that had heard matters related to Aadhaar  and none of the four senior judges, who had publicly criticised  the CJI, are on it.

Headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, the bench has Justice AK Sikri, Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan as other members.

The Supreme Court had earlier ruled an extension of the deadline for Aadhaar-linking with mobile phones, bank accounts and government schemes to March 31, 2018.

The top court's rule was preceded by the Centre urging the Supreme Court to extend the deadline of Aadhaar-linking to March 31, 2018.

According to reports, the revenue department under the Union Finance ministry has issued a new set of rules amending the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) rules (maintenance of records), 2005.
