Sukhois to be back in air shortly

New Delhi, Nov 14 (IBNS): India's frontline combat aircraft Sukhoi-30 fleet, which was grounded after a crash near Pune, will be back in air shortly, media reported.

According to NDTV, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha on Friday said that investigations of the Court of Inquiry of last month's crash, which involved Sukhoi will be finalised soon and the fleet will be back "within a week".

When asked specifically about how long it will take for the Sukhoi flights to resume, he said, "Within a week's time, we will start flying this aircraft".

This is the longest period that the Russian-made aircraft has been grounded since 2009 when its operation was suspended for nearly three weeks following an accident.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) decided to ground the entire fleet of Sukhoi pending technical reviews on Oct 22 after one of the fighters crashed in a field near Pune in mid-October.

Following the decision, about 200-odd Sukhois didn't go out in air.

Preliminary findings had suggested that it’s not human error, but a technical problem in the fly-by-wire system of the jet as the main cause behind the accident.

A Court of Inquiry was ordered to ascertain the actual cause of accident.

According to IAF, till date SU-30 MKI has been involved in five accidents since 2009 and the fleet has at least been grounded twice earlier.

The Su-30 fleet has faced a high number of mid-air engine failures during the last two years, said an IAF official.

Sukhoi “Su-30MKI” is a super-maneuverable air superiority fighter developed by Russia's Sukhoi and built under licence by India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
