Students stage protest outside Delhi Police headquarters following JNU violence, demonstrations held across different cities

Showing solidarity with students of JNU, students of Aligarh Muslim University took out a candlelight march while similar scenes were seen in Kolkata where Jadavpur University students demonstrated.

Similar student-led protests were reported from Mumbai and Pune.

The violence in JNU campus on Sunday left several people injured.

Meanwhile, a large number of students, along with other people, on Sunday night gathered outside the old Delhi Police headquarters at the ITO to protest against the Delhi Police for "delayed action" in the violence at JNU campus this evening.

This is the second time within a period of less than thirty days when people form all walks of life have gathered outside the PHQ, protesting against the police.

Last month, the protesters accused the police of taking unnecessary action against students of Jamia Millia Islami University by entering and thrashing students into the varsity campus.

This time, people staging the protest against the police for "not taking action on time".

The protestors said that the police became a "mute spectator" as the group of masked attackers vandalised JNU hostels and thrashed students, including the JNUSU president, faculty members and others.

The angered public is lashing out at the police alleging that police have hand in gloves with the attackers in the entire JNU incident and did not enter the university.

Hundreds of students and others who gathered outside old Delhi Police headquarters as the news of violence at the JNU campus spread like a wildfire.

Students from the JNU, Delhi University (DU), Jamia and other universities were amongst who initially reached the old PHQ and raised slogans against the police.

Meanwhile, traffic movement has been closed on Vikas Marg ITO due to the demonstration and the police have advised people to avoid the stretch.

On Sunday evening, a group of unidentified masked goons attacked students inside Jawaharlal University campus and in hostels in which JNUSU president, general secretary and around twenty students got injured and admitted to the AIIMS.

According to reports, after violence, Delhi Police conducted flag march inside the campus to control the situation.

Many politicians and celebrities condemned the violence. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed Delhi Police chief to take necessary action on the issue.

The official Twitter handle of the Home Ministry tweeted: "Union Home Minister has spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner over JNU violence and instructed him to take necessary action. Hon’ble minister has also ordered an enquiry to be carried out by a Joint CP level officer and asked for a report to be submitted as soon as possible."
