Strike by DTC employees in Delhi continues

New Delhi, May 12 (IBNS) The strike by Delhi Transport Corporation workers continued on Tuesday in protest against the murder of bus driver Ashok Kumar who was bludgeoned to death by a biker in a road rage incident.

Reports said some DTC buses in South and East Delhi were plying, but there was a complete strike in North and rural Delhi with only 1000 of 4500 buses plying.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has promulgated Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to maintain bus services.

A senior official of the state government has been quoted as saying that  services of striking employees will be terminated if they don't turn up for work. If any employee disrupts government work then they can be arrested also.

The body of the DTC driver is yet to be cremated. His family members have also joined the DTC employees in their strike. The victim's family members have said that they will try to meet  Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The government  has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim's family, which however, is is demanding a Rs one crore as compensation and a job to one of the relatives.

The police have arrested the motorcylist's mother for instigating her son to attack the driver. The accused was also arrested on Sunday. .
