SP leader requests Mulayam Singh to nominate Yakub Memon's wife as Rajya Sabha MP

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IBNS) A Samajwadi Party leader on Saturday triggered a controversy by requesting party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav to nominate 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's widow Raheen as a Rajya Sabha MP, media reports said.

His request came just two days after 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central Jail.

Mohammad Farooq Ghosi, Samajwadi Party vice president of Maharashtra unit has written the letter to Mulayam Singh.

He has, however, said the  timing of the letter was wrong. "I should not have written a letter to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. I understand this was not a proper time to write such a letter."

Ghosi, however, is firm on his demand for Rajya Sabha berth for Memon's widow.

Memon was convicted for for the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts for aiding, abetting and facilitating terrorists.

He was hanged on July 30 following a prolonged legal battle.
