Sonia Gandhi pays homage to B R Ambedkar on death anniversary

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IBNS) Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday paid homage to Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on his death anniversary.

"Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi has paid homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on the 61st Mahaparinirvan Divas," a tweet from Congress' verified account read.

"Remebering Babasaheb as a great son of India, Smt Gandhi said, Ambedkarite idea of social justice & equality is a powerful weapon of unity and social justice. His life and struggle shaped the destiny of independent India, she added," it read.

"Describing Babasaheb's contribution in shaping the Constitution as unforgettable, Smt Gandhi, has called for defending and preserving the idea of India as also the principles of equity & social justice that are the lifeline of India's Constitution," it added.

Ambedkar was independent India's first Law Minister and is regarded as the architect of the Indian Constitution.

He received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest honour, posthumously in 1990.
