Sonam Wangchuk to End Fast if MPs Back Education Accountability Debate in Parliament

| @indiablooms | Jul 20, 2026, at 12:47 am

New Delhi/IBNS: Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he is willing to end his indefinite hunger strike on Monday if political leaders visit him at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital and commit to raising the issue of education accountability during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, according to his wife, Gitanjali Angmo.

Speaking to the media, Angmo said Wangchuk's demand goes beyond his personal protest and seeks a broader political commitment to initiate a parliamentary discussion on reforms and accountability in India's education system. Parliament's Monsoon Session is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The development comes as Wangchuk remains under medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital after being shifted there following concerns over his health during the prolonged fast. Hospital authorities have described his condition as stable while continuing to monitor him closely.

On Saturday, Delhi Police and medical personnel shifted Wangchuk from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated following three weeks of fasting, a move his supporters criticised as involuntary while authorities maintained it was necessary on medical grounds.

Meanwhile, Angmo has said she will lead the planned march to Parliament in Wangchuk's place while he remains hospitalised. She has also moved the Delhi High Court seeking permission to shift him to a private hospital, alleging that his continued stay at Safdarjung Hospital amounts to "illegal detention", a charge contested by government authorities.

Sonam Wangchuk has called July 20 Parliament march India's 'second freedom movement' in a note, shared on social media. "20th July. India's second freedom movement. Freedom from injustice (like paper leaks). Freedom from fear [my illegal detention]." he wrote.

However, Delhi Police has strictly prohibited all "unauthorized protest marches and assemblies of five or more people" in the New Delhi district. This enforcement is due to the Monsoon Session of Parliament and the proposed "Chalo Sansad" march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

"Prohabitory orders u/s 163 BNSS are in force in New Delhi District except designated protest site at Jantar Mantar Road. Further, no permission has been sought or granted for any proposed march to Parliament on 20 July 2026. Citizens are advised not to participate in any unauthorised gathering or procession. Please respect the prohibitory orders in force and cooperate with Delhi Police in maintaining public peace, safety and security," Delhi Police said in a social media post.

On Sunday, veteran actor Shabana Azmi also visited Jantar Mantar in solidariy with the youth and CJP protesters.

Sonam Wangchuk's current protest began on June 28 at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where he launched an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) following the NEET paper leak controversy and broader concerns over the integrity of India's examination system.

The protesters' principal demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, arguing that political accountability must accompany repeated examination irregularities. Wangchuk has described the campaign as India's "Second Freedom Movement", linking it to the aspirations of millions of young Indians frustrated by exam leaks, unemployment and what they see as a lack of accountability in governance.
