Six ULFA-I militants surrender with arms in Assam’s Tinsukia district

Guwahati/IBNS: Six hardcore militants of banned outfit United Liberation Front of Assam – Independent (ULFA-I) laid down arms before security forces in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Friday.

The militants surrendered before the security forces with a huge cache of arms and ammunition during the combing operation launched by Assam police, Indian army, Cobra battalion of CRPF against the militants in the district along Assam-Arunachal border.

The surrendered militants were identified as Pabitra Asom alias Phamen Moran, Alok Asom alias Mintu Moran, Merchant Asom alias Pranjit Moran, Abon Asom alias Rajib Moran, Sonjuk Asom alias Milan Jyoti Mahanta and Puron Asom alias Kalyan Baruah.

The militants deposited four MQ81 rifles, two AK-56 rifles, 13 magazines, two hand grenades, 395 rounds live ammunition, uniforms etc.

Tinsukia district Superintendent of Police (SP) Shiladitya Chetia said that based on reliable information about presence a militant group at Margherita area, the Tinsukia district police, Indian army, 210 Cobra battalion, 68 battalion CRPF had jointly launched operation at the area.

“When the security personnel reached the area, four militants came up to lay down their arms and we responded it. In separate joint operation at Tekri Mangaon area under Pengeri police station, two more ULFA-I militants came up to lay down their arms,” Shiladitya Chetia said.

The top Assam cop further said that: “When we have received an information that, some ULFA-I militants had entered into India by crossing the Indo-Myanmar border to carry out activities in Tinsukia district and other parts of Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, a joint operation has been launched in various places since October 21.”

Earlier, two ULFA-I militants surrendered before the team of police and Indian army with arms on Thursday.
