Situation in violence-hit Kohima limps back to normal, Army on strict vigil
On Thursday, more than a thousand people, armed with spears and matchets, the traditional weapons of Naga warriors, hit the street and set afire a number of Government buildings, including the old secretariat.
The agitators demanded the resignation of Chief Minister TR Zeliang's cabinet as the Government decided to hold local body elections in 12 towns across the state.
They were also protesting against the killing of two persons in police firing at Dimapur on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister's office said in a statment that said the protestors' demand for resignation of the cabinet it is "simply unacceptable and non-negotiable".
Five army columns have been deployed in addition to other security forces in Kohima to maintain law and order.
The Kohima District administration has issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in certain areas including the Raj Bhavan.
