Shiv Sena leader takes a dig at Gopal Krishna Gandhi over V-P poll

| | Jul 17, 2017, at 06:34 pm
New Delhi, July 17 (IBNS): Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut brought a scathing attack on Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the Opposition- nominated candidate for the vice presidential poll, by reminding that the latter was the one who had opposed the hanging of terrorist Yakub Memon.

Attacking Gandhi on Sunday late evening, Raut, said on Twitter: "Do you want Gopal Krishna Gandhi as VP ? who opposed hanging of 93 Mumbai Blast plotter Yakub Memon. "

Former West Bengal governor, Gandhi, petitioned to the president Pranab Mukherjee in 2015 urging to reconsider the death sentence of terrorist Memon, who was convicted for the 1993's Mumbai blast.

Gandhi even invoked former president late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's view of death sentence in the petition.

The former WB governor has been nominated by the Opposition comprising of eighteen parties for the vice-presidential poll.

However, the ruling party at the Centre didn't nominate any V-P candidate yet.

The presidential election has already begun this morning. It is going to be a battle between two Dalits, Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar.

While former Bihar governor Kovind is a NDA nominated candidate, the Opposition picked former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar as their joint candidate.

Kovind is in a favourable position to win the presidential poll as NDA bags the required number of electoral votes.
