Shazia Ilmi, Captain Gopinath resign from AAP

New Delhi, May 24 (IBNS) Two prominent members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) - Captain GR Gopinath and Shazia Ilmi - on Saturday resigned from the party.

Addressing the media, Ilmi said: "I have resigned from the AAP today. I believe that AAP could have done a lot more to change the political discourse in the country. It did a lot for the country. But it has done a lot of mistakes as well."

She said there is lack of discipline and democracy within the party.

"There is no internal democracy in the AAP. No one followed swaraj in the party itself. There is no collective decision making in the party," said Ilmi.

Meanwhile, Captain Gopinath said although he respected AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal but he found the latter's recent actions as disappointing.

"I respect Arvind Kejriwal a lot. But what happened in the last few days with him not seeking bail, is disappointing," he said.

"I have a lot of differences with the party and hence I decided to quit the AAP," he added.

Earlier in the day, AAP leader Somnath Bharti met Ilmi to try to convince her not to resign from the party.

AAP leader Yogendra Yadav on Saturday said he hoped his colleague Ilmi did not resign from the party.

"Shazia Ilmi is a valued colleague. But she is a very emotional person. This is not the first time she spoke about resignation. But I hope after persuasion she will change her mind," said Yadav.

According to reports, after losing the Lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad, one of the founder members of AAP, Ilmi, was unhappy with the party leadership making her contest from the constituency.

She said she wanted to contest the General Elections from one of the seven seats in Delhi.

Pertinently, Ilmi also lost the Delhi assembly elections from R K Puram.
