SC rejects plea to terminate foetus diagnosed with Down Syndrome

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IBNS): The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, rejected a woman's request to terminate her 26-week old foetus because the foetus is suffering from Down Syndrome, according to media reports.

SC rejected the plea saying "we have a life in our hands", media reported.

The apex court said though the medical report suggests the foetus is likely to have mental and physical challenges but that does not warrant a termination of pregnancy.

In January, SC had allowed a woman to terminate her pregnancy under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act when the medical report said that the foetus would not be able to survive without a skull, media reported.
