SC nixes sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's plea in 30-year-old custodial death case
New Delhi, Jun 12 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to consider a petition filed by sacked Indian Police Service officer, Sanjiv Bhatt, seeking a direction to issue summons to witnesses in connection with a 30-year-old custodial death case against him.
The custodial death case was being heard by a trial court in Gujarat in which the former IPS officer is an accused.
A vacation bench, headed by Justice Indira Banerjee and also comprising Justice Ajay Rastogi, refused to hear the petition.It held,'' At this stage we were not inclined to pass any order. The petition filed by Sanjiv Bhatt is devoid of merits."
During the course of the hearing today, the division bench, was informed that the trial court in the state of Gujarat had already reserved its judgement in the over 30-year-old custodial death case for June 20, Thursday.
The former IPS officer had approached the apex court seeking its direction to issue summons to witnesses to be examined in the custodial death case.
