External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday interacted with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand over the telephone when they discussed prospects of strengthening the relationship shared between the two countries.

Jaishankar wrote on X: "Appreciate the telecon with FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada."

"Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties," he said.

Jaishankar wished the Canadian leader a successful tenure.

Anand later wrote on X and thanked Jaishankar for the productive discussion they shared over the telephone.

"Thank you Minister @DrSJaishankar for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada–India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. I look forward to continuing our work together," she said.

Almost two weeks after  Prime Minister Mark Carney's  Liberal Party won the parliamentary polls, Indo-Canadian lawmaker Anita Anand, 58, was appointed as the country's  Minister of Foreign Affairs this month.

She replaced  Melanie Joly.

Joly is currently serving as the Minister of Industry.

Indian PM Narendra Modi had wished Carney after he took charge as the Canadian counterpart.

"Congratulations @MarkJCarney  on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory," Modi wrote on X.

In his message, Modi said India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values.

He had stressed on strong people-to-people ties between the two nations.

"I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people," he said.

India-Canada Tie Nosedived

Relationship between India and Canada nosedived during the tenure of former PM Justin Trudeau over the killing of Khalistani leader Nijjar on the Canadian soil.

Trudeau had publicly accused India of being involved in the killing of the Khalistani leader.

India had denied the allegations.

Tensions further escalated after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, forcing India to take a tit-for-tat move.
