Rs 95 lakh banned notes recovered in Guwahati, three persons arrested

Guwahati, May 21 (IBNS): The sleuths of Bureau of Investigation (Economic Offences) of Assam police seized huge quantity of scrapping notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, amount worth of Rs 95 lakh from a lodge in Guwahati on Saturday night, officials said.

The BIEO team also arrested three persons in connection with it.

According to the reports, following a tip-off, a BIEO team led by SP Shyamal Saikia raided at Brahmaputra lodge near Sixmile area in the city and seized the huge amount in possession from three persons, those stayed at the lodge.

The BIEO sleuths arrested Chandra Baishya, Yadav Deka both hailing from lower Assam’s Baksa district and Pradip Deka hailing from Noonmati area in Guwahati.

“We had recovered around Rs 95 lakh of banned Rs 500 and 1000 notes in possession from them,” BIEO SP Shyamal Saikia said.

During interrogation, the arrested persons revealed that, they had carried the banned notes for changing to new notes on 23 percent commission basis.

They also revealed that, a businessman Nirmal Sarma based in Guwahati had assured them to change the banned notes to new notes.

Police has launched operation to nab the businessman and unearth the racket.
