Srinagar, Feb 16 (IBNS) : Suspected militants believed to be locals looted at least Rs 3 lakh from a Jammu and Kashmir bank branch in Shopian district of south Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

According to reports four armed men opened fire outside the J&K Bank Branch at Turkawangan of Shopian town before forcing their entry inside.

“Militants forcibly entered into the branch and looted at least three lakh in cash from bank cash counter. They held some employees and customers hostage for while before fleeing from the bank,” said a bank employee.

Police have started an investigation, the official said, adding that the bank's CCTV is being scanned to identify the culprits.

There has been a sudden rise in armed robberies in banks in Kashmir after  demonetisation.
