RJD lawmaker Raj Ballabh Yadav convicted for raping teenager in Bihar

Patna, Dec 15 (The BiharPost/IBNS): A local court in Bihar on Saturday held Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Raj Ballabh Yadav guilty for raping a teenaged girl.

Yadav who has been suspended from the party is accused of luring the victim to his residence in Nawada district and raping her in his confinement. Apart from Yadav, five others were also convicted for the crime.

The quantum of punishment will be announced on Dec 21.

The incident took place in February 2016 while the RJD was a part of the ruling ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (Grand Alliance) government in Bihar headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar. The chief minister broke alliance with the RJD only 17 months later.

Soon after the case was registered, the legislator had gone into hiding. He surrendered in the court a month later and was sent to jail.

In September 2016, Yadav was granted bail by the Patna High Court but the state government moved the Supreme Court in appeal.

Acting on the government appeal, the apex court not only cancelled the bail but also asked him surrender before a lower court. The SC passed the order in November the same year.
