Kolkata/IBNS: Junior doctors have called a massive rally in Kolkata on Wednesday in protest against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The doctors have, however, skipped participating in the Nabanna march which was called by students under the banner Chhatra Samaj.

The rally by the junior doctors will be held from Shyambazar to Dharmatala.

"Today marks the 18th day of our movement for justice," the convention said as quoted by The Indian Express and added, "The broad presence of people from all sections of society demonstrates that the fire of our movement cannot be extinguished."

The convention was attended by personalities from diverse fields. Likes of Binayak Sen, Mir Afsar Ali, Bolan Ganguly, Jeetu Kamal were present.

"We urge everyone to make this rally successful, to solidify the ground for our movement and to ensure that our collective demands are heard by those who may still be pretending not to listen to us," a doctor associated with the forum said as quoted by The Indian Express.

The forum has raised concern over the safety issues women healthcare workers face.

A nationwide outrage was sparked over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the intervening night on August 8 and 9.

One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested by police in connection with the case but protesting students as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case, which is now being probed by the CBI.
