Renowned Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi shot dead at his residence

Bengaluru, Aug 30 (IBNS): Renowned Kannada writer, research scholar and retired vice-chancellor MM Kalburgi was shot dead at his residence in the northwest city of Dharwad by unidentified youths on Sunday morning.
He was 75 years old.

Two unidentified youths reportedly knocked on the doors of Kalburgi's residence in the morning.

When Kalburgi's wife opened the door, the youths claimed that they were the writer's students. They entered his room and shot him twice in his head.

He collapsed on the ground and died within minutes.

A shocked wife of the writer ran out of the house on hearing the gun shots.

Within seconds, the youths escaped on a bike.

Kalburgi had been provided police protection for the last six months because of his enmity with fringe groups in society.

However, the police protection was withdrawn 15 days ago on the basis of his request.

In the past, miscreants had pelted stones at Kalburgi, who had written more than 100 books in Kannada and received several awards.
