Kolkata/IBNS: After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow cricket great Sourav Ganguly to contest the ICC elections, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari countered her by demanding the appointment of the outgoing BCCI president as the state's brand ambassador.

Presently, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who also owns a city cricket team, is the brand ambassador of West Bengal.

Adhikari told the media, "Remove Shah Rukh Khan and make Sourav Ganguly the brand ambassador of West Bengal. If Mamata Banerjee wanted to extend Ganguly's role, then she should have made him the brand ambassador of the state.

"Don't do politics in sports. PM Modi stays out of these things."

Speaking to the reporters, Mamata, who was "shocked" at Ganguly's BCCI exit, said, "I request the Prime Minister to make sure Sourav Ganguly must be allowed to contest the ICC election..."

"I request the Government of India not to take a decision politically, but for cricket, sports... He is not a political party member," she added.

She has also referred to Ganguly as the "pride of the country".

Meanwhile, Ganguly has announced his decision to contest the upcoming elections to the president's post in Bengal cricket's governing body, CAB.

Ganguly Saturday said, "The nomination filing date is Oct 22. I am going to contest the elections."
