Ranchi (Jharkhand): A 47-year-old hotel owner in Ranchi was shot dead on Saturday night after a customer allegedly received non-vegetarian biryani instead of the vegetarian one he had ordered, police said on Sunday.

The shooting took place around 11.30 pm at a hotel on Kanke-Pithoria Road.

According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Praveen Pushkar, the customer had initially taken the parcel and left, but soon returned with a group, complaining that he had been served non-veg biryani, eported PTI.

The restaurant owner, identified as Vijay Kumar Nag, was having his meal when one of the men opened fire, hitting him in the chest.

He succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital, the officer said, the report added.

Nag was a resident of Bhittha under the Kanke police station limits.

His body was later sent for post-mortem at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Police have launched multiple raids to trace and arrest those involved, Pushkar added.

"Irate locals on Sunday morning blocked the Kanke-Pithoria Road for some time, demanding action against the culprits. The blockade was later lifted after we assured them that the assailants would be arrested soon," Kanke police station officer-in-charge Prakash Rajak was quoted as saying by PTI.

He said further investigation is underway to determine if there was any other motive behind the killing.
