Jaipur, Dec 19 (IBNS): After Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the Congress government in Rajasthan on Wednesday announced the waiver of farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh.

"All loans are waived for those defaulting on farm loans from cooperatives and banks till 30.11.18," chief minister Ashok Gehlot told reporters on Wednesday evening. "While for cooperatives, the entire loan is waived, the waiver amount is up to Rs 2 lakh for banks."

"Congress president Rahul Gandhi had promised during the election campaign that if we won, we could waive farm loans within 10 days of forming the government. We had also made the promise in the manifesto," he said, adding the the previous BJP government had not delivered on their promises.

The move will cost the Rajasthan government Rs 18,000 crore.

Following the Congress governments' action in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the BJP governments in Assam and Gujarat on Tuesday waived rural electricity bills and farm loans in the two states.

The waivers cost the Gujarat and Assam governments Rs 650 crore and Rs 600 crore respectively, media reports said.

Following the developments in Gujarat and Assam, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took to Twitter to take a jibe at the BJP governments in the two states and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The Congress party has managed to wake the CMs of Assam & Gujarat from their deep slumber. PM is still asleep. We will wake him up too," he said.
