Rahul Gandhi is weakening Opposition's strength: Arvind Kejriwal
New Delhi, Apr 27 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party convenor (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said what Congress president Rahul Gandhi is doing today is directly weakening the Opposition's strength.
In an interview to India Today, Kejriwals said,'Congress president Rahul Gandhi is directly trying to weaken Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, SP-BSP alliance in Uttar Pradesh, Chandrababau Naidu in Andhra Pradesh and the Left in Kerala.'
On why the talks between the AAP and Congress failed, Kejriwal said it was because of Mr Gandhi.
'The AAP had been saying it wants to form a pre-poll alliance with the Congress in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Goa. In public Mr Gandhi pretended that he wants to form an alliance with us but reality was different," Kejriwal said.
On Mr Gandhi's tweet saying he was ready to give four seats to AAP in Delhi, Kejriwal said his tweet did not mean anything.
"In world history, have you heard of any instance when a political alliance was formed on Twitter? Rahul Gandhi was merely pretending that he wants an alliance with AAP but in reality he did not want to join hands with us,' he said.
"Alliances are formed through talks and not via tweets," he said.
Kejriwal blamed Congress for the failure of the talks between the two parties.
'The talks between AAP and Congress were going well. AAP wanted to form an alliance with Congress for 33 seats in Punjab, Haryana, Goa and Delhi,' he said.
'AAP could 'never imagine' to join hands with Congress, a party it fought against for its 'rampant corruption'. But the situation before the nation is such that at present the priority is to stop the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo. This is why we agreed to form an alliance with the Congress for the 2019 Lok Sabha election," he said.
The CM claimed that last week senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad called AAP leader Sanjay Singh about the alliance.
"Everything was decided and fixed. The next day the two parties were to hold a joint press conference to announce the alliance. But from the next day, Congress leaders stopped answering our calls," Mr Kejriwal said.
"They then presented a new condition which was impossible for us to agree upon. But somehow we agreed to their condition. After this, they suddenly said they don't want to form an alliance with us," he claimed.
The Congress and AAP have fielded their own candidates for all seats in Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Haryana.
