Rahul Gandhi demands Marina Beach burial for Karunanidhi

Chennai/New Delhi, Aug 8 (IBNS): As the DMK and the AIADMK are now engaged in a conflict over the burial site in Marina beach for late ex-Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he deserved to be given a burial at the famed southern beach.

"Like Jayalalitha ji, Kalaignar was an expression of the voice of the Tamil people. That voice deserves to be given space on Marina Beach. I am sure the current leaders of Tamil Nadu will be magnanimous in this time of grief. #Marina4Kalaignar," Gandhi tweeted.

Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, also expressed similar opinion when he posted: "Pettiness is the hallmark of some of our political relationships & no where is this more obvious than in the denial of the @arivalayam’s chosen place for #Karunanidhi ji’s last rites. The AIADMK Govt should reverse its cussedness. #Marina4Kalaignar."

In a conflict with the AIADMK government, the DMK moved the High Court over the state's denial to allow the burial of the mortal remains of former Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, who passed away on Tuesday, at Chennai's Marina Beach.

The DMK had requested the state government to allow Karunanidhi's burial on the same land where former Chief Ministers- CM Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa- were covered.

The High Court heard the case last night.

It is also hearing the case on Wednesday morning.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malivia, however, attacked Gandhi over the remark and said he was an 'irresponsible leader' as he was inflaming passions when people are 'grieving & emotions are running high'.

Referring to ex-PM PVN Narasimha Rao's last rites, Malivia tweeted: "Only an irresponsible leader will inflame passions when people are grieving & emotions are running high. That reminds us of the magnanimity shown by Sonia Gandhi when she didn’t allow mortal remains of PVN Rao to be kept at AICC let alone be given a ceremonial cremation in Delhi."

Karunanidhi passed away on Tuesday.

He was 94.
