Pune court grants bail to Hindu leader Kalicharan arrested in hate speech case

Pune/IBNS: Self-styled Godman Kalicharan Maharaj, who was arrested for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at an event, was granted bail by a Pune court on Friday, media reports said.

Kalicharan Maharaj, alias Abhijit Dhananjay Sarag, allegedly abused Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at an event here.

He was remanded to judicial custody on Thursday after his one-day police custody expired.

The public prosecutor, who opposed Kalicharan's bail, argued if the Hindu leader was granted bail, he may create chaos and even attempt to abscond.

Kalicharan's advocate Amol Dange counter-argued that the police officer, who had made the arrest, did not issue any notice under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Hence the arrest, Dange claimed, was illegal.

Hearing both the sides, Chief Judicial Magistrate MA Shaikh said as quoted by India Today, "It will take time to complete the investigation. Till then, the accused cannot be kept behind the bar, by putting some conditions, the accused can be released on bail."
