Post BJP defeat in UP, Rahul Gandhi meets Sharad Pawar

| @indiablooms | Mar 15, 2018, at 07:18 pm

New Delhi, Mar 15 (IBNS): Hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s defeat in Uttar Pradesh by-polls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, stirring  speculations about a possible opposition unity ahead of 2019 General Election, media reports said.

Rahul reportedly met Pawar on Wednesday night.

The report said Rahul's meeting with Pawar was an attempt to bring all anti-BJP forces under an umbrella to take on the Modi wave.

The meeting took place a day after 19 political parties attended a dinner hosted by Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

On Wednesday, the SP-BSP alliance defeated the BJP in Gorakhpur and Phulpur seats, which were considered to be the bastions of UP CM Yogi Adityanath and deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.

The speculations about the Opposition unity are on the air for sometime and they have gained momentum after several BJP allies like TDP, TRS and Shiv Sena openly criticised the NDA government at the Centre recently.

TDP has already pulled its two ministers from the central government while the Shiv Sena announced that it will go solo in 2019 Lok Sabha election.

TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has called for a third front which was backed by West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.
