Police make first arrest in journalist Gauri Lankesh murder case

Bangalore, Mar 9 (IBNS): The  Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday made the first arrest in the murder of journalist  Gauri Lankesh.

The arrested person has been identified as  K.T. Naveen Kumar .

The SIT had taken him into custody on Mar 2.

The 37-year-old man was taken in custody of SIT almost two weeks since his arrest for possessing a pistol and live bullets, media reports quoting police said.

Sources in the special probe team told NDTV that they believe Naveen Kumar played a 'small but significant' role in the murder of Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead at close range by unidentified men outside her home in Bengaluru on the night of September 5 last year.

Though Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy in November last had said that the identities of the killers of  Gauri Lankesh will be revealed soon, in past few months there were no news of any breakthrough.

The Karnataka Government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the murder of Gauri Lankesh.

Lankesh, 55, a popular journalist known for her opposition to Right-wing ideology, was shot three times by some unknown assailants outside her residence.

She was the editor of  Lankesh Patrike, a weekly newspaper.

Her murder bears a resemblance with earlier murders of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and MM Kalburgi.

Gauri Lankesh's murder had sparked country-wide protests.
