Police constable killed, five others injured during clash in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 24 (IBNS): An Assam police constable was killed and five others were injured during a clash in Assam's Biswanath police district on the wee hours of Thursday, police said.
The incident took place at Beltoli Nirola basti, a remote village dominated by religious minority at around 2 am on Thursday.
 
Biswanath police said that, based on intelligence input a police team with six armed personnel had launched operation at the remote village to nab a thief, whom there are case registered.
 
“When the police personnel apprehended the thief a section of local villagers gathered at the area and put up a resistance attacked to the security personnel by pelting stones,” a police official said.
 
In the mob attack, a police personnel named Dwipen Hazarika was injured and he succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
 
The mob also set ablaze a police vehicle.
 
The police personnel had resorted to baton charge and firing to disperse the mob leading to five people injured.
 
The police official said that, as rumours spread out that, police personnel had come to the village to nab Bangladeshi nationals.
 
“But there have no Bangladeshi nationals in the village. Police personnel went the village to nab a thief who took shelter at the remote area,” the official said.
