Police arrest journalist for alleged Facebook post threatening to kill Assam CM

Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam police have arrested a regional news channel journalist for an alleged objectionable post on social media against Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and threatened to kill the Chief Minister.

Police arrested the youth identified as Maniruddin Rahman alias Surajit Harsh from Goreswar area in Baksa district on Thursday.

According to the report, the youth had allegedly posted an objectionable post on social media against the Assam CM and threatened to kill the Chief Minister which read that – “Sonowal is a curse to Assam....Shoot him if I had a gun.”

Following the objectionable post, Hindu Jagaran Manch, Goreswar lodged an FIR at Goreswar police station and a person named Benudhar Nath lodged another FIR at Dispur police station against the youth.

Police said that, 29-year-old Maniruddin Rahman had operated a Facebook account in the name of Surajit Harsh.

Police arrested the youth under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including sections 294, 295(A), 506 and section 67 of the IT Act.

Guwahati city Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that, police arrested the youth from Baksa district and a case has been registered against him at Dispur police station.
