Poacher killed in Kaziranga, AK-56 rifle, ammunition recovered

Guwahati, Apr 7 (IBNS): Day after poachers killed one rhino in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP), one hardcore rhino poacher was killed during a massive gun fight with security personnel and a poacher gang in the national park on Friday night.

Based on intelligence input about presence of a poacher gang trying to kill rhino inside the Kaziranga National Park, the Jakhalabandha police launched operation at Deuchor area under Burhapahar forest range in the national park and killed a poacher after a massive gun fight with the poacher gang.

Police recovered one AK-56 rifle, over 100 rounds live ammunition and other materials from the encounter site.

The other poachers of the gang had managed to flee from the area with help of darkness.

“Wehave noticed that, 3-4 members poacher gang were coming from opposite site of the national park and trying to enter the park. We asked them to stop, but they started firing upon us and we also retaliated. One poacher killed on spot and we had recovered one AK-56 rifle, huge quantity of ammunition, two magazines from the area,” Deven Bora, Officer-in-Charge of  Jakhalabandha Police Station said.

On Apr 5, poachers had killed one rhino at Bagori forest range in the world heritage site recognised by UNESCO.

The latest report of Rhino Population Estimation, 2018 stated that, total number of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park counted 2,413.

In past two years Kaziranga had lost 21 rhinos which were poached inside the park.

Poachers had killed 14 rhinos in 2016, 7 in 2017 and 4 in this year so far.
