New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, among others, on Tuesday greeted the people on the occasion of Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanteras, the first day of Deepavali festival.

"Greetings to everyone on the special occasion of Dhanteras," PM Modi posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Extending his warm wishes, Amit Shah tweeted in Hindi, "Warm wishes to all the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. May Lord Dhanvantari bless everyone with happiness, prosperity and good health."

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, "Wishing everyone happiness, prosperity and good health on the auspicious occasion of 'Dhanteras'."

BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda also took to Twitter to greet the people. "Greetings to all the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. I wish everyone success, prosperity and well-being."

Congress leader Rahul Gandi tweeted, "I wish happiness and prosperity across the country. Greetings to all on the festival of Dhanteras!"

Celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika, Dhanteras marks the beginning of the three-day festival of lights, Deepawali.

Lord Dhanvantari, considered as the God of health and Ayurveda, is worshipped on this day. Hindus consider this as an extremely auspicious day for making new purchases, especially of gold or silver articles and new utensils.

It is believed that purchasing a new "Dhan" (wealth) or some item made of precious metal brings good luck. The day also witnesses heavy purchase of appliances and automobiles.
