PM Narendra Modi visits Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseille, pays tribute to Indian soldiers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron visited the Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseille on Wednesday and paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World Wars I and II.

"Both leaders laid wreaths to honour the sacrifices of the fallen," read a statement issued by the Indian government.

The Mazargues War Cemetery preserves the history of valour and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought for peace in Europe.

Their saga continues to inspire many.

"The Cemetery commemorates the deep people-to-people links that continue to nurture India-France ties," the statement said.

Narendra Modi is currently on a three-day visit to France.

He attended the AI Action Summit in Paris.

Apart from visiting the cemetery, Modi and Macon jointly inaugurated the Indian consulate in Marseille city.

What did PM say after visiting the cemetery?

After visiting the cemetery, Modi said the bravery of the soldiers will not be forgotten.

Modi posted on X: "At Mazargues War Cemetery, President @EmmanuelMacron and I paid homage to the soldiers who fought in the World Wars. This includes several Indian soldiers who valiantly fought and displayed utmost grit."

He said: " All the brave soldiers answered the call of duty and fought with unwavering courage. They shed their blood in the hope of a better and more peaceful world. Many of them never returned, but their heroism will continue to be remembered for the times to come."
