PM Modi will not visit Assam to inaugurate Khelo India Youth Games 2020

New Delhi/IBNS: Amid ongoing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not visit the state to inaugurate the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 in Guwahati on Jan 10, media reports said.

Though no official communication regarding the matter has been made so far,  CEO of Khelo India Games Avinash Joshi told media that his visit stands cancelled and they are informally aware of the same.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Joshi said, “We had invited the Prime Minister. Till now, no confirmation has come. But informally, we have been informed that he is not coming.”

According to reports, the decision was taken after All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) issued a warning that a huge protest will be held across the state if PM Modi attends the event.

The state witnessed a total of four deaths so far in police firing during anti-CAA protests.

Owing to the continuous protests, the annual summit between PM Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe scheduled to take place in Guwahati from December 15 to 17 was also cancelled.

The Khelo India Games, introduced in 2018, has been aimed to ‘revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level'.
