New Delhi/Kolkata, Jan 12 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid tributes to Indian Hindu monk late Swami Vivekananda on his birthday on Thursday.

Modi, who offered flowers to Vivekananda's statue at the national capital, tweeted: " I bow to Swami Vivekananda on his Jayanti. Today, on National Youth Day I salute the indomitable energy and enthusiasm of our youngsters, who are the builders of New India."

West Bengal is observing the day as 'Vivek Chetna Utsab'. Banerjee tweeted: " Today is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. We observe this day as 'Vivek Chetna Utsab' in #Bengal. May his life be an example for the youth of India to always work for the betterment of the country."

Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk. He was a disciple of Indian mystic Ramakrishna.

He was born in an aristocratic Bengali family in Kolkata (then Calcutta). Vivekananda was inclined to spirituality.

He also traveled to foreign countries to disseminate Hindu philosophy.

Jan 12 is celebrated as the National Youth Day.
