PM Modi to inaugurate Sports University in Meerut today

New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Meerut to lay the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University to be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town at an estimated cost of about Rs 700 crores.

The PM desires to inculcate sporting culture and establish world class sporting infrastructure in all parts of the country, the PMO said.

The PMO said that the establishment of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University at Meerut will be a major step towards fulfilling this vision.

"The Sports University will be equipped with modern and state of the art sports infrastructure including synthetic Hockey ground, Football ground, Basketball/ Volleyball/ Handball/ Kabaddi ground, Lawn tennis court, Gymnasium hall, Synthetic running stadium, Swimming pool, Multipurpose hall and a Cycling velodrome. The university will also house facilities for Shooting, Squash, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Archery, Canoeing and Kayaking, among other facilities," the PMO said in a release.

The University will have the capacity to train 1080 sportspersons including 540 female and 540 male sportspersons.

"The University, built in the memory of hockey legend Maj Dhyan Chand ji, will give a new direction to the innumerable sporting talent of Uttar Pradesh and the country," UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted later Saturday evening.

The PM will address a public meeting in Salawa and interact with 32 players on various aspects of sports.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel will also attend the program.
