PM Modi meets Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah to discuss Afghanistan situation
New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at his residence to discuss the situation unfolding in Afghanistan, media reports said.
This comes as Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on Monday declared victory of the group over the resistance forces in the northeastern province of Panjshir.
"Panjshir province, the last stronghold of the mercenary enemy, was completely conquered," he said in a tweet, after a night of intense fighting between the Taliban, aided reportedly by Pakistani special forces, in the holdout province.
Foreign minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman were also present in the meeting at PM Modi's residence.
More than three weeks after the Taliban seized control of Kabul, there is still no clarity on the formation of a government.
India is closely watching the top resistance leadership, who are in Tajikistan, said reports.
The discussion also expected to focus on engagement with the Taliban.
Last week, in the first official contact with the Taliban, a meeting took place between the Indian Ambassador to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, and the Head of Taliban's Political Office in Doha, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai.
India's foreign ministry has said that the immediate focus is to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for terror activities against India and the remaining evacuations.
PM Modi has reportedly formed a high-level group to focus on the immediate priorities of India in view of the evolving situation in Afghanistan.
