PM Modi launches mega employment drive in backdrop of Covid-19 impacts on economy

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday highlighted the negative effects of Covid-19 pandemic on the economy launching the mega employment drive, dubbed as Rozgar Mela in Hindi, ahead of key assembly elections in the country.

Under the drive, Modi distributed 75,000 appointment letters among the government job aspirants.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur handed over the letters to the appointees at the event which was held in Chandigarh.

The appointees will join 38 ministries of the union government across various levels.

In his speech, the Prime Minister touched upon how the global economy has suffered the body blow due to the "once-in-a-century pandemic".

Modi said, "It is a fact that the global situation is not very good. Several large economies are struggling. In several countries, problems such as high inflation and unemployment are at their peak.

"But despite this crisis faced the world over, the impact of which is being felt everywhere, India is taking new initiatives and some risks to save our country from being affected by these problems."

"We are working to soften this impact on our country. It is a challenging job, but with your blessings, we have been protected till now," the Prime Minister added.

The employment drive comes amid the Opposition's claim the government has failed to fulfill its promises on the employment front.

Moreover, the decline in the value of rupee has kept Prime Minister Modi's powerful Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on a sticky ground.

With two upcoming elections in Modi's homestate Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the ruling BJP will look to ward off the Opposition's claim peddling the employment drive to continue with its best ever electoral run.
