| @indiablooms | Jul 25, 2018, at 11:37 pm

New Delhi, July 25 (IBNS): The Upper House of the Parliament on Wednesday passed a bill that will enable the prevention of economic offenders like Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi from fleeing the country to evade the legal process.

On July 19, the Lok Sabha cleared the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018.

On Wednesday, the same was passed by the Rajya Sabha by a voice vote.

The bill was moved by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal.

Goyal said that several economic offenders are able to flee the country to evade the legal process due to lack of any prevailing law and the same needs to be stopped.

This comes after offenders like Lalit Modi, Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi have fled India after being involved in offences worth Rs. 2.4 lakh crore at least.
