Parents join hunger strike in Jadavpur Varsity

Kolkata, Jan 12 (IBNS) The stalemate in Jadavpur University entered a new phase on Monday with parents of the agitating students sitting on a 12-hour hunger strike at the campus gate demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty.

The parents, who joined the demonstration showing solidarity with their children's cause said the one and only solution to the present situation was in the resignation of the controversial VC.

The students have already been on a hunger strike for eight consecutive days. A third-year student had to be admitted to hospital on Friday after his health deteriorated.

Situation in the University campus has been on boil for over the last three months over the alleged  molestation of a student by seniors and a police crackdown on agitating students who surrounded the VC's office demanding punishment of the guilty.

The incident led to a running feud between students and authorities. With moral support coming from different sections of society, a section of students even boycotted the convocation held on December 24 maintaining that the VC must step down. A fresh controversy arose when a student refused to accept her certificate from Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi after climbing the podium and the head of the state reportedly asked her to leave the place.

On Saturday, the Governor  warned the VC against delaying action in the molestation case. He also expressed concern on the condition of some fasting students.
