Param Bir Singh letter row: Devendra Fadnavis accuses MVA govt of 'protecting' Anil Deshmukh

Mumbai/IBNS: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday accused the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state of "protecting" state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, accused of corruption, over Param Bir Singh letter row, media reports said.

Fadnavis suggested the "alibi" put forth by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar at a press conference was full of discrepancies.

"Sharad Pawar addressed a press conference and said claims made by Param Bir Singh are incorrect as Anil Deshmukh was hospitalised and then quarantined. On February 15, Deshmukh came to Mumbai by a private plane and it was said he was home-quarantined," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said as quoted by India Today.

"I have two schedules. On Feb 17, Anil Deshmukh was at Sahyadri Guest House at 3 pm. On Feb 24, the manifest shows his movement from Residence to Mantralay," Fadnavis said and added, "Between February 15 and 27, the Home Minister was home-quarantined and not in isolation. He met several people and officials. The information can be easily accessed."

He added, "An intelligence report dated 25th August 2020 was submitted to the then DGP and in turn the DGP very next day forwarded to ACS home for appropriate further actions. I have 6.3 GB data and all these transcripts which were given to the CM."

"But this MVA Govt did not take any action on these severe & sensitive allegations. Instead transferred the intelligence Commissioner. All officials mentioned in these transcripts got the same postings. I am going to Delhi to meet Union Home Secretary for this today."

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has levelled serious allegations against Deshmukh in a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

In his letter, Singh, who has been transferred to low-key Home Guard, alleged that Deshmukh had a target to collect Rs 100 crore every month and used several police officers, including former head of Crime Intelligence Unit of the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police Sachin Vaze, for extorting money from from restaurants, pubs, bars and hookah parlours in the city.

However, Deshmukh had claimed that Singh was transferred because of the "unforgivable" lapses revealed in the investigation of Mukesh Ambani security scare case.
