Pained beyond words, says Indian PM Modi on Dhaka carnage
New Delhi, July 2 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condemned the terror attack in Dhaka calling it a despicable act beyond words and spoke to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.
"My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that those who are injured recover quickly," he said on the attack in a Dhaka cafe by suspected Islamic State terrorists who took several foreigners hostages and killed many of them.
"India stands firmly with our sisters & brothers of Bangladesh in this hour of grief. The attack in Dhaka has pained us beyond words. I spoke to PM Sheikh Hasina & strongly condemned the despicable attack," Modi said in a tweet.
An Indian girl lost her life among the 20 foreigners killed in the deadly terror attack after being taken hostage in the upscale restaurant for more than 10 hours.
Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted: "I am extremely pained to share that the terrorists have killed Tarushi, an Indian girl who was taken hostage in the terror attack in Dhaka."
The people were kept hostage for nearly 10 hours in Dhaka's upscale restaurant Gulshan. The stand-off between Army and terrorists came to a end on Saturday morning.
Six terrorists were also killed in the battle.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said that a terrorist was caught alive.
As the operation came to an end, 13 captives, including three foreigners, were rescued.
Brigadier General of Bangladesh Army Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury told reporters in Dhaka that: "We've recovered 20 bodies. Most them had been brutally hacked to death with sharp weapons."
According to the Army, most of the victims were Italian or Japanese.
"Three of those who were rescued were foreigners, including one Japanese and two Sri Lankans," the spokesperson told media.
The ISIS has already claimed responsibility for the terror attack, a first of its kind in Bangladesh.
