Over 97 lakh voters to decide fate of 43,515 candidates in first phase panchayat polls in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 4 (IBNS): The ruling BJP, Ason Gana Parishad, Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) are locked in a keen battle as the stage is set for the first phase panchayat poll in Assam will be held amidst tight security on Wednesday.

A total of 97,45,709 voters will exercise their franchise in 14,077 polling booths to decide the fate of 43,515 candidates contesting in the four tier 15,899 constituencies.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, the first phase panchayat poll will be held in 16 districts.

A total of 796 candidates are contesting for 251 Zila Parishad Member constituencies, 3799 candidates for 1304 Anchalik Panchayat Member, 4155 candidates for 1304 Gram Panchayat President and 34,756 candidates are contesting for 13,040 Gram Panchayat Member constituencies.

The second phase rural polls will be held on December 9 and counting of votes to be held on Dec 12.

Meanwhile, over 70,000 polling personnel and more than 50,000 security personnel have been deployed in the first phase rural poll and they are leaving for their respective polling booths since Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, 734 candidates have been declared elected unopposed including 442 candidates for the first phase and 292 for the second phase.

Candidates of 734 Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) constituencies have been declared elected unopposed and among these candidates - 380 are from the BJP, 193 from the Congress, 28 from the AGP, 10 from the AIUDF, one from the CPM, five from the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and 117 Independents.

The first phase will witness mostly direct contest between ruling BJP, Congress and AGP.

AGP is an ally party in the BJP-led Assam government, but both BJP and AGP are fighting the rural polls separately.
