Over 3500 ammunition, huge quantity explosives recovered in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 11 (IBNS): After killing of Sohan D Shira, C-in-C of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Meghalaya police is now trying to crack down the insurgent group and recover arms, ammunition and explosives of the outfit.

Following up on the recent recoveries of a huge cache of explosive devices, arms and ammunition from the stronghold of the GNLA outfit, Meghalaya police have recovered huge quantity of ammunition, explosives of the outfit from different locations in East Garo Hills district.

East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) RTG Momin said the Meghalaya police team has launched a massive search operation to locate the hidden weapons and recovered over 3500 rounds ammunition, 10 numbers remote circuit for IED, two remote controls, 16 charger clips, 4 ammunition boxes from different locations.

“The search operation was continued for over three days and spread over Dorengkigre, Bawegre, Nengmandalgre, and Chachatgre villages. Many of the villagers joined in to help the police as they were familiar with the area, and after an extensive search, huge quantity of ammunition, explosives were recovered from Dorengkigre, Nengmandalgre and Chachatgre areas,” the top Meghalaya cops said.

The recovered things include, explosives, 2038 rounds of  7.62 AK ammunition, 60 rounds of 9mm, 1087 rounds of 7.7mm, 320 rounds of HMG ammunition, 10 numbers remote circuit for IED, two remote controls, 16 numbers charger clips and 4 ammunition boxes.

On Apr 9, Meghalaya Police recovered 30 pistols with 44 pistol magazines, 2 AK46, 1 LMG and 2 magazines, 1 INSAS and 2 magazines, 44 SLR magazines, 1 AK magazine, 60 SLR live rounds, 7 walky talkie sets along with more items in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district.

Police also arrested 5 people.

The recovered arms are believed to the banned outfit group GNLA.
