He said with PV Sindhu winning a Silver medal and Sakshi Malik bagging a Bronze at the Rio Olympics, there has been a lot of focus on the extra-curricular activities.
"It is a positive sign that people are taking interest in all sports," Modi said.
However, the Prime Minister said there is a need to focus on sports.
"We have to go a long way when it comes to focusing on sports. Sports needs motivation and public is the best entity to do it," said he.
The PM also said: "New Sports Committee will make a road map for upcoming Olympics to better performance."
Speaking about this year's performance at the Rio Olympics, Modi said: "In many disciplines, Indian players have done well. Players like Dipa Karmakar, Lalita Babar, Abhinav Bindra, Vikas Krishan Yadav performed well in Rio."
He also announced that August 29, which is the birth anniversary of Hockey legend Dhyanchand, will be celebrated as 'National Sports Day' across the country.
