OTT platforms even show porn: Supreme Court says favouring regulation of contents
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday said there should be a screening of video content offered by OTT (Over-the-top) platforms for regulatory mechanisms and added that "even pornographic material is being shown" on some of them.
The apex court made the observations while directing the Centre to place before it the recent guidelines of the government to regulate social media platforms.
While hearing a plea by Amazon Prime India head Aparna Purohit over the 'Tandav' controversy, Justice Ashok Bhushan said: "Now watching movies on the internet and OTT has become common. We are of the view there must be some screening."
Purohit has challenged an order by the Allahabad High Court in the ongoing investigation against the web series 'Tandav'.
"A balance has to be struck as some OTT platforms are also showing pornographic materials on their platforms," the bench was quoted as saying in media reports.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to provide protection against arrest to the team of Amazon Prime's original web series 'Tandav' after at least three FIRs were filed in Uttar Pradesh over the content which allegedly insults the Hindu gods and goddesses.
Now, Amazon India's head Aparna Purohit has appealed to the top court against the Allahabad High Court's Feb 25 order declining anticipatory bail to her.
A single-judge bench of Allahabad High Court had rejected an anticipatory bail filed by Amazon Prime India's top executive over an FIR filed by Uttar Pradesh Police in Noida against the makers of the controversial web series 'Tandav'.
Purohit has been accused of promoting religious enmity and defiling a place of worship.
