Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, who chaired the 18-party  meeting, was quoted as saying by media that Gopalkrishna Gandhi has agreed to be the candidate for the vice-presidential election.

Congratulating for being nominated for the election, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Congratulations to Gopal Gandhi Ji for being unanimous choice of all Oppn parties for Vice President. His credentials are his biggest asset."

Election for the next Vice-President of the nation will be held on Aug 5.

The term of current Vice President M Hamid Ansari ends on Aug 10.

MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will vote to elect the new Vice President.

The BJP-led NDA has not named its candidate for the poll so far.
