Opposition Congress, AIUDF walk out of Assam assembly session over flood and erosion issue

The monsoon session of the Assam Legislative Assembly has begun from today and is scheduled to go on till Aug 1.

Floods and erosion issues were topped the priority list of today’s topics of discussion.

But the opposition Congress and AIUDF MLAs wanted to discuss on the flood issue immediately at the start of the session, in which chaotic situation erupted in the Assembly.

The opposition Congress and AIUDF MLAs had protested with placards and walked out.

Opposition leader of the Congress party Debabrata Saikia said that, the government is failed to tackle the flood and erosion situation in Assam as over 80 people have died in the current flood in the state.

“The Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have eroded around 60,000 bigha land in state every year. Several people have rendered homeless, landless for this. Whereas the fund was available with the Assam government, but the government hadn’t utilised it properly. Without working to repair the damage embankments, they were busy in the Citizenship Amendment Bill. So that, no work was done last year. They also promised during the election time that, they will declare Assam flood as the National problem and will be funded to control it, but they didn’t. The government has not given attention in this issue. So we walked out of the assembly today,” Debabrata Saikia said.
