Guwahati/IBNS: One lifeless body has been recovered from the coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao two days after it was flooded with water, media reports said.

The body was recovered by 21 para divers from the bottom of the mine's well. He has been identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestho from Nepal.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X, "21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family."

He added, "The body recovered from the well has been identified as Sri Ganga Bahadur Srestho from Udayapur district, Nepal."

Eight others are still trapped.  The rescue operation is in full swing.

The nine workers got trapped on Monday after water inundated the coal mine.

Sarma said the mining seems to be "illegal".

One person has been arrested in connection with the incident, said the CM.

Sarma discussed the rescue operation with union coal minister G Kishan Reddy and sought assistance.

The trapped are from Assam, West Bengal and Nepal.
