Old multi-storey building collapses in Kolkata, 1 dead

Kolkata, Sep 5 (IBNS): At least one person was killed and two others were seriously injured after an old residential four-storey building collapsed in Kolkata's Burrabazar area on Tuesday morning, officials said.

According to reports, the building, which had been marked as 'hazardous' by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) earlier, suddenly collapsed at around 11:30 am. and at least three persons were trapped inside the wreckage.

Local police, fire and emergency services officials and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the scene and rescued all persons from the debris.

"An old multi-storey collapsed at Shibtala Street area under Posta Police Station limits in Kolkata's Burrabazar area at around 11:30 am. today," a local police official told IBNS.

"After rescuing all three trapped persons, including two women and an old man, we took them to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where the man was pronounced dead," the official added.

According to police reports, the deceased has been identified as Taraprasanna Saha (90) while his wife Shovarani Saha and daughter Beuty Roy are being treated at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in serious conditions.

An official of the state fire and emergency services has confirmed that no more person is trapped under the debris.
